I love paint! A lot of the time I dream of these paint projects and then just put them off forever. I always have painting on my to do list but never quite get to it. But once I go to the store and get the paint then all I want to do is paint paint paint! After I paint I always wonder why it took me so long! Paint is such a cheap way to make a difference. And I love that it is not permanent. I am so excited to share with you this Home Depot paint samples project.

We have a small entryway. So I haven’t had anything in the space. We had a bench there but it ended up taking up too much room. I knew I needed to do something to take the area to a new level! So here is what I came up with and I couldn’t love it more!

Home Depot Paint Samples Project

This whole project was based on these hanging planters! These planters are the cutest! I have so many plants that I have been running out of room. So when I found out that I could hang plants from the wall- I was all in! My cute friend Nikki sells these planters! So if you are a local Utah friend- she can get them for you! She is the best! She is also my plant dealer haha. I get so many of my plants from her and her prices are amazing! Follow her instagram here because she posts on her stories all the time with new plants! You will become addicted haha. And like I said she can get you these awesome planters! She will even plant a plant in it that will complete the look! Nikki is the best and seriously my favorite girl to follow on the gram!

What I love about these planters is that they have the Behr paint color that matches them exactly. I have linked them so you can check out what they are like, read reviews etc. But seriously get them from Nikki because she will find you a plant to put in it to finish off the look!

I had been wanting to do a fun Home Depot paint samples project and this one was it! I love the color terra-cotta and decided to paint a strip to match these planters. The Behr paint color is called Thanksgiving M210-7 and my Home Depot actually didn’t have the color out on display. But I asked about it and they said they can make any past Behr color still. I had been wanting to paint some terra-cotta for awhile but couldn’t find the perfect shade. No wonder because this one isn’t on display haha. But Thanksgiving is the best terra-cotta shade in my experience!

How to Paint!

I got my sample paint for only $4 so this was a cheap project! And I only used half the can so it covered a lot more than I thought it would. Painter’s tape is what I used to square off the rectangle I wanted to paint. I measured from the bottom up a few times and made little marks. Then from there I used the level to tape across. I made sure to push the tape down really well to create a seal.

I used a paint brush for the first coat and it took awhile to paint. You could also see the paint strokes. So while I didn’t want to have to clean a roller for a small project- it was definitely worth it! Originally I was going to paint all the way to the edge. But instead used the width of the painters tape to make a more frame looking square.

How to Hang Planters

After I did the two coats and let the paint dry- I hung the planters. I decided to hang the middle planter right in the middle of the wall. And I wanted the planter to be exactly in the middle of the rectangle height wise. So I made sure to measure and take into account where the screw would go aka how far down it hangs.

Once you have the anchor and the back piece in, then the planter just slides right down. It really is so easy! Now when I shared about this project on my Instagram stories I had some questions. A lot of you wanted to know how to water these planters. So many people thought that dirt and water would spill all over the floor. Well guess what?! They don’t! It is so sweet!

Once the top of the soil is really dry- then just water the back of the planter. Between the wall and the plant there is a pocket type water well. You just fill that well up with a water can and the water will soak down into the roots. So if you watered the planters from the top then yeah water and dirt might fall then. But this is really so easy. I keep them on the wall and everything and just stand on a chair or step stool and water the back. Simple as that!

It was so fun to pick out plants for the planters. I wanted some different textures and length. The string of pearls plant added some length and texture (the middle plant!) I got this plant from Nikki and I can’t get enough!

Hope you enjoyed this Home Depot paint samples project!

If you are painting soon then here are some of my favorite paint supplies!

Roller Brush

Paint Drop Cloth

Painter’s Tape

Paint Tray – here is a trick! Line the tray with aluminum foil and then just throw that away when you are done so you can use the tray again. Also if you are painting and need to take a break- you can wrap your paint brush. If you are going to be painting again soonish and don’t want to clean your brush- then wrap it in foil. Leaving your brush in foil will help keep it wet and not let the paint harden.

If you are thinking about painting- just do it and you will be so glad! Also if you love plants- start hanging them on the walls- it takes it to a whole new level!
