Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. October is Fire Prevention Month – practice safety in numbers to ensure your family’s super prepared too!

We love camping and of course with camping comes camp fires. I personally think a lot about outdoor fires and how terrifying wildfires are. While that is all very important your home needs to be equipped with the correct equipment and your family needs to have a plan. It is so important to have a safety plan as a family. This is something Eric and I were talking about just the other day so I love that we have a plan now.

Growing up my bedroom was on the second floor and my dad came up with a plan. I had a fire escape ladder under my bed. My family also had a meeting place where we would all meet if we were to get separated. Not only did we have a plan but we practiced this plan.

Did you know that October is Fire Prevention Month? What does that mean to you and how can you be prepared?

Fire Prevention Month raises awareness about safety- especially fire safety and home safety. Having a plan in place will help your family in the event of an emergency. In honor of Fire Prevention Month this October, First Alert is encouraging everyone to practice “safety in numbers” to ensure you are “super prepared” when it comes to whole home safety.

I love this video and what it can teach your kids about fire safety. I showed Beck this video and he kept talking about the fire engine and what we learned. Videos are such a fun way to teach your children.

According to the NFPA*, in 2016 there were 352,000 home fires, and 3 out of 5 fire deaths occurred in homes without smoke alarms. When you hear that statistic at least for me it makes me want to put even more smoke alarms in my home. The number-one thing that causes house fires is when people cook unattended. These facts and statistics show the importance of having the proper protection in your home. Fire Prevention Month is a great time to make safety a whole family affair.

Home and fire safety is a family affair that everyone should be involved in. It is fun to have everyone have a say but also everyone needs to know the plan. Smoke alarms provide early warning if there is a fire in your home. When thinking about installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms they should be installed on every level, including the basement and inside and outside every sleep area. Once you install the alarms you need to make sure to check the batteries at least every six months. If you are looking for less maintenance and worry you can upgrade to First Alert’s 10-year sealed battery alarms. Sadly alarms don’t last forever, so be sure to remember to replace every 5 to 10 years (depending on the model.)

Carbon Monoxide is often overlooked but very important. Carbon monoxide is also the #1 cause of accidental death which is so alarming! It is crazy to think about the deaths that can be prevented with proper detectors and alarms. CO is invisible tasteless and odorless gas. CO alarms detect this poisonous gas and provide early warnings that can be lifesaving. Carbon Monoxide often comes from furnaces and water heaters etc but can be produced by any fuel burning device. It is the #1 cause of accidental deaths in the US. Every year there are 80,000 CO incidents. So when you learn 40% of homes do not have a single CO alarm it seems like a big missed opportunity.

It is crazy to hear that over 100 million homes in the US are not protected with smoke alarms. I hope that as you are reading this you want to go out there and buy detectors and also make a plan with your families. While alarms provide early warning in the event of a fire. Fires spread quickly, and there is not a lot of time to escape so every second counts.

These facts and statistics show the importance having  the proper protection in your home. Fire Prevention Month is a great time to make safety a whole family affair.
